Why You Gave Up On Your New Year’s Resolution

Dear Friend,

It was a pleasure to receive your letter in which you outlined your New Year’s resolutions for this year. I am pleased you took the time to write them down. I recently read that you become 42% more likely to achieve your goals and dreams, simply by writing them down on a regular basis. Kudos to you! You are well on your way to an amazing year. Thank you for keeping me updated.

I’m not surprised you hit a few speed bumps on the way. Reaching goals don’t just happen. Goal setting and reaching them require two different yet similar mindsets. Allow me to share my experience about what makes reaching set goals more likely.

Write your goals down

Check! You did this. Best to write your goals down in a journal and read them often to remind yourself. Preferably do this by hand. It’s more powerful than writing down with a keyboard.

Read your goals often

Remind yourself often of your goals. Remind yourself every day or several times a day just by reading them to yourself or out loud. The more often the better.

Write goals in a positive way

I know this may sound crazy but when we create the goals we create them in a negative way; lose 15 lbs, don’t work so late or stop smoking. Since our minds don’t understand lose, don’t and stop, wording goals in this way keeps the focus on what we don’t want. Instead, word them in a positive way.

  • It’s so great to be at this xxx weight. My body feels right. I feel good.
  • I enjoy being home at 6pm to spend time with my family. It’s a great feeling to be so productive that I finish all my work in 7 hours and have time to prep for the next day.
  • I really enjoy inhaling fresh air, clean clothes, the scent of flowers. It so much easier to breath when I do sports.

Set a stake in the ground

Set a date for yourself that you will strive toward to have achieved your goal. Some examples can be found below.

“By the 17th of March I will be wearing a size 6 dress that I will wear to the company’s 50th-anniversary party”; or ” Every evening I will spend 30 minutes with each of my children doing what they want, before dinner.”

Visualize

Every great athlete uses visualization to improve their game. Every successful person visualizes to achieve goals. Visualization in addition to the above-mentioned actions improves your success by 162%. This is 4 times more than just writing down your goals.

To be successful at visualization it’s important to use all your senses when you create that visualization. Don’t just see yourself reach your goal, feel it, taste it, smell it and hear it. Use all your senses in your visualization. Answer these questions. What do you see when you reach your goal? How does it feel when you reach it? What do you hear? What do you smell? The more senses you incorporate, the faster you’ll get there.

Don’t worry about them

Set it and forget it!

Once you have all the above set and practicing it regularly, don’t fret about when you will reach the objective you desire. Just be there fully when you are doing each of the steps, and let it come to you when you aren’t. Just relax and let your goal arrive.
